How to use Google’s Advanced Search Option

This tutorial is not going to tell you how to search on Google because that is pretty obvious. However, very few of us utilize an advanced search option feature Google has which can accrue better results. It allows narrowing down of queries and getting perfect results. After reading this you are strongly advised to go through the Google guide to know more about advanced features.

You will find “Advanced Search” option on the left side of the Google Search box. Click it and you will be taken to the advanced search option page.

A many options will be listed there like

  • Contain all or at least one of the search terms.
  • Not to include any specific words in your query
  • Search in a specific language.
  • Search for a specific file format.
  • Restriction to results having adult material

In the bottom you will see perform search in specific areas as shown in the figure.

Now if you are a person like me who believes in creating the query himself, then you should know about these search operators which will give you the flexibility to improve your search.

You can use “+” or include operator to restrict the search to have a specific word. For example if you search for “Google” the first hit will be www.Google.com. But if you do it this way “Google + uk” then it will be www.google.co.uk. And don’t forget to include a space before the “+” sign.

You can use “OR” operator to search for any one of the two terms. It works same as the ordinary “OR” operator.

If you want to restrict your search to only one site then you should use “site” function. For example if you do “computer site: www.tipadviser.net” you will get all contents from our website having “computer” keyword in them.

You also can include a Numeric Range in your search. When you search for “TV $100..$1000 site: www.amazon.com” you will get all the occurrences of TV in Amazon’s site having a price associated in between $100 to $1000.

Like these, there are many advanced features available in Google search. It really won’t be a waste of time if you learn a few.
