How to Identify your IP Address

IP Address or Internet Protocol Address is nothing but a set of four numbers joined by “.” or a dot, to identify you on the vast network of WWW. It works the same way as postal ZIP code works. It can be represented as XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, where XXX can be any number in the range of 1 to 255. When you visit a website using an internet connection, you are identified at the server by this number only. Now it can be of two types, Static and Dynamic. The first one means it never changes for your computer whereas dynamic IP Address means just the reverse. Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) can give you a unique IP each time you connect through it, from a pool of IP Addresses.

There are mainly two ways to identify this number.

1st method

  • You can simply visit different websites available who will display your IP Address at no cost. It costs only a small piece of code to display it for you. If you want to know your IP Address, then just Google up for these websites.

2nd method

  • You can also find your IP Address from your computer. Follow these steps

Step 1:

Open the “Run” command window from “Start” -> “Run” and type “cmd” there. A black command prompt will show up like the following,

Step 2:

Type “ipconfig” there and hit “Enter”. You will see a list of results and there you can see your IP Address.

Now you would have expected to see a number as explained above, but it is showing something non-numeric and total two IP Addresses. It happens when you access internet from within a LAN. In that case your computer is assigned a unique Intranet IP Address and it is not revealed outside the network of yours. The first one showing a number of 192.168.1.20 is this number only. And if you verify your IP Address by a website then it shows the one assigned by your router.
