You can easily repair a hole on any plaster wall no matter what size it is as long as you have the basic directions and the proper tools. The problem with plaster walls even though they look great, they can easily be damaged just by bumping the wall with furniture on move in day, or opening a door too wide and the door handle going through the wall. However, you can fix these without much trouble at all.
Smaller holes will of course be very easy and inexpensive to repair and will only take a short amount of time except for the drying time. You could probably repair on the small holes in a day throughout your entire home.
Small holes
For small holes, such as ones made by nails can be filled in with such products as wallboard compound or spackle.
What you will need:
Spackle
Putty knife
Wet cloth
Sand paper
Paint
- First, using the putty knife scrape around the hole to remove any left over plaster.
- Dampen the area with a wet cloth
- Fill in the hole with spackle
- Wait until the area is completely dry
- Sand the area down until smooth with the surrounding area
- Paint the area to match
Large Holes
For larger holes such as ones made by door knobs or furniture you will need some of the same items as used for small holes but you will need a few more that you do not need for small holes.
What you will need:
Plaster instead of spackle
Wire mesh larger than the hole
Piece of wire
Thin piece of wood longer the width of the hole you are repairing
Wet cloth
Putty knife
- First, using the putty knife scrape around the hole to remove any left over plaster.
- Put a piece of wire instead the center of the wire mesh
- Place the wire mesh inside the hole
- Use the wire to pull the mesh into the hole
- Use the small piece of wood and twist the wire around it to hold the mesh in place (Be sure the mesh is tightly held in place)
- Wipe the inside of the hole and the mesh with a wet cloth
- Now, apply a coat of plaster
- Let it dry completely
- Remove the piece of wood
- Apply another coat of plaster
- Using the putty knife scrape away extra plaster
- Let the plaster dry completely
- Sand the area down until smooth with the surrounding area
- Paint the area to match
