Step 1:

Go to Start Menu > Control Panel

Step 2:

Inside control panel, select ‘uninstall a program’ under ‘programs’.

Step 3:

It will generate a list of your install applications. You can select any application you want to remove and then press ‘uninstall/change’.

Step 4:

You will be asked for confirmation after which the application would be installed.

In this tutorial we will see how you change the resolution of your monitor. In a windows machine a monitor’s resolution is measured in pixels and represented as “X by Y pixels” which means your screen will be ‘X’ pixels wide and ‘Y’ pixels high. Please follow these guidelines to set your computer’s resolution to fit your monitor’s size.

Step 1:

Right click on any free area on the Desktop and click on “Properties”. In the next window that pops up, click on the “Settings” tab on the top Menu Bar.

Step 2:

There will see a specific box named “Screen resolution”. It is the option which sets your monitor’s resolution in pixels. As you can see, by default is “1024 by 768 pixels” which means 1024 pixels in width and 768 pixels in height. Now if your monitor is small or very big, you may be required to adjust the resolution to optimize visibility. To do so, click on the “Slide Bar” there and adjust the value. And click on “Apply”.

Step 3:

Once you do so you will be prompted with the following information and your desktops resolution will be set to the desired value. If you like this setting then click on “Yes” otherwise go for “No”.

Step 4:

Now click on “Ok” on the main window and your monitor’s resolution will be changed.

We always need to hide some of our personal files on the system; the reason may be security or something  other. Using the general way to do so i.e. using Windows hiding technique is not that secure because anyone else having access to your system can uncheck the hiding option and view the files. So here we will discuss one more technique that will super hide your data. And even though “view hidden files” option is checked, those files won’t be visible. Now before doing this, you should know Windows hides its system files using some other technique and those files are not visible even if the hiding option is unchecked. Just follow these simple steps.

Step 1

First open any Explorer window and go to “Tools” -> “Folder options” -> “View”. You will get a list like this,

Uncheck the option that says, “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)” and check the option “Show hidden files and folders”. While doing so you will get a “Warning”, click on “Yes”.

Step 3

Now in the top folder of the hierarchy you will see a folder named “RECYCLER”. Copy and paste this folder to the place where you want to save your files as super hidden. And rename the folder.

Step 4

Now after copying your personal files in the renamed folder, go back to the Step 1 and do the following. Again check the options which say, “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)” and “Do not show hidden files and folders”. Once you do so, system files won’t be visible anymore.

Now whenever someone tries to view your hidden files using the known way, they won’t be able to because you have hid the files as system files and they are not visible even though hidden files are.

Lyrics are the textual transcription of the audio files you listen to, it’s like subtitles in case of video files. In Windows, Windows Media Player allows you to add the lyrics which means the lyrics will show up automatically whenever the music files are played. Follow these steps to do so,

Step 1:

First open the audio file in Windows Media Player you want to add lyrics to. Now search for the lyrics for that song online in any website that offers lyrics free of cost. Copy the lyrics from there and save it to a local file in your computer.

Step 2:

Open Windows media player, click on the “Library” button on the to menu bar. The following window will display.

Step 3:

In the main window you will see the listings of “Now Playing”. Right click on the item to which you want to add Lyrics and select the option “Advanced Tag Editor”.

Step 4:

On the right hand side click on “Add” button and the following small box will appear on top of that. From the drop down list select the language in which the lyrics is.

Step 5:

Just below it, you will see another area called “Text”. In that text area paste the Lyrics you have copied from the website. And then press “Ok”.

Step 6:

Now come back to “Now Playing” area from the top Menu bar. If you don’t see the lyrics displayed in the Visualization area, then click on the “Play” on the menu Bar and go for “Lyrics, Captions, and Subtitles”. Under this select the sub-option “On if Available”. Now you can see the lyrics displayed on the Visualization area.

After following these steps, you can add lyrics to any of your favorite music files.

Active Desktop was a feature introduced by Windows long ago. Although in the beginning this feature wasn’t actively used, now with the increasing use of Internet, people have started to use this feature more and more. It gives you the flexibility to use your desktop just as any other browser. You can have your wallpaper set up in the desktop itself. You can even embed different graphical elements or Java Applets. Just follow these steps to activate Active Desktop,

Step 1:

Right click on any empty area on you desktop and on the window that appears click on “Properties”. You will get the following window,

Step 2:

On the top Menu bar you will see one option “Desktop”, click on it. The following window will open up. Click on the “Customize Desktop” at the bottom as shown in the screenshot.

Step 3:

In the next window as shown in the following screenshot you will see another option “Web” on the top Menu bar. Go for it.

Step 4:

You can see an option for “My Current Homepage”. Check on it. It will import your homepage from IE as the Active Object to be displayed on the desktop. And press “Ok”.

And you are done. You can see your homepage displayed on the wallpaper and you can use it right from there. All the information will be displayed on your Desktop itself.

Green Gadgets

This tutorial can not be called a traditional How-To type tutorial. We all know how to use the keyboard and some Shortcuts too. But perhaps you’ve never come across a full listing of the available shortcuts. And guess what? Some of them are very useful. Once you learn them, you will definitely find yourself using them regularly. So here is a very concise list of some interesting key shortcuts.

• Windows Key + L à used to quickly lock your computer.
• Windows Key + D à used to show the desktop. It can be useful when you have a many windows open and need to access some important shortcut on the desktop. If you want all the windows back, then click the key combination again.
• Windows Key + M à minimize all the current active windows.
• Windows Key + shift + M à open all the minimized windows together.
• Windows Key + R à to open “Run” Command
• Windows Key + Pause/Break à display “System Properties” Dialog box.
• Windows Key + Tab à cycle through the all open entries on the Task bar
• Windows Key à display ”Start” menu.
• Alt + Enter à display the “Properties” of the selected file or folder.
• Alt + Space Bar à display the shortcut menu of the current window.

I have tried to put some interesting key shortcuts which will be useful for general use. For a complete listing of all the available ones please consult Microsoft’s help manual.

With the introduction of Unicode, it has been possible to use every language spoken on this planet on the computer which was simply impossible to do with 8 bit ASCII code. And your Windows has a pre-installed support for that. You can write and read documents in any language supported in Unicode. Only you have to enable this feature. Follow these steps to do so,

Step 1:

Open your “Control panel” and click on the “Date, time, Language and Regional Options”. On the next window you will find an option for “Regional and Language Options”, click on it. Follow the screenshot,

Step 2:

Once you do so the following window will pop up and on the top Menu Bar you can see a tab named “Languages”, go for it.

Step 3:

In the second box named “Supplemental Language support” you will see two options – “Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)” and “Install files for East Asian Languages”. The first option is for languages like Arabic and second one is for different languages like Hindi, Mandarin, etc. check the option you want. Once you do so you will prompted with a confirmation message, click on “Ok”. Now click on “Ok” on this window and after some System tasks have been performed, you will be asked to insert your Windows Install disc which contains all the required files as shown in the picture. Insert the required disk and press “Ok”. And if you have saved the image file somewhere on your computer or on your network, you can give that location also. And once you press “Ok” all the necessary files will be installed.

Now you can easily read and write in your native language. Remember to do the above said steps you must be logged in your computer as an “Administrator”.

Sometimes when you are on your work PC you wish you could have access to your home PC to get aaccess to some important files. Perhaps you don’t know, but your Home Windows XP comes with a nice bunch of utilities which lets you do this easily. It’s called Remote Desktop Connection. Once you have configured it properly you can have full access to your PC from anywhere. The required steps are as follows,

Step 1:

First of all, you must create a “User” account on the system which you are going to access remotely. It must be associated with a strong password.

Step 2:

After having created the “User” account, go to the “control Panel” and click on the “Performance and Maintenance” button as shown in the screenshot.

Step 3:

Next on the window click on “System” option and following window will open up. As you can see on the top Menu bar one tab is there named “Remote”, click on it.

Step 4:

There under “Remote Desktop” one option will be there “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer”. Check it in as shown in the following screenshot,

Step 5:

Now that you have configured your System to be accessible remotely, you need to know how to connect to it. First, log on to the other Remote computer. On the “Start” menu go for “All Programs” -> “Accessories” -> “Communication” -> “Remote Desktop Connection”. The following window will pop up,

Type in the details of your computer and you will be logged in to it. You can simply work it as if you were logged on to you own system.

Remember to make it happen you need you home PC to have a unique IP Address. And it is always advisable to get a static IP to connect to it easily.

Firewall is the component installed in your system which keeps you isolated from the dangerous outer world. Yes, nowadays threats to your system are increasing exponentially. Windows Firewall keeps you protected against one certain type of malware called “worms” which spreads over Internet from computer to computer. It acts as a barrier between your computer and any other computer outside. So it is always recommended to keep it on. Follow these steps to switch on your Windows Firewall.

Step 1:

First of all open the “Control Panel” from “start” menu.

Step 2:

As you can see in the above screenshot there is one option “Security Center”, click on it. The following window will pop up,

Step 3:

You can see “Firewall” option there. If nearby that “NOT MONITORED” is there then it means your computers Firewall has been disabled by any means. So you have to enable it again. Go for the next step to do so.

Step 4:

Just below it you will find a button named “Recommendations…”, click on it. The following window will open up. You will find a button “Enable” just next to the written text “Turn on Windows Firewall for all network connections”. Click on it. And another window saying “Windows Firewall was successfully turned on” will pop up. It means your firewall has been turned on. Click on “Close”.

And you are done. Now Windows Firewall will keep your System protected against all the possible threats.

It is a well known fact that more than 80% of regular computer users still use Microsoft’s Windows. And Microsoft has always kept its user fully satisfied. After you buy Windows, they don’t leave you unprotected to the increasing daily threats to your computer. To keep it in a healthy condition you need to install the regular updates or patches released by Microsoft. Although there are many ways to do so, it is always advisable to get it done automatically. So here we will discuss the steps required to update your Windows through Windows “Automatic Feature”. These are as follows,

Step 1:

Open your control panel through “Start” menu. The following window will open up. Here we are considering Classic view of Control Panel.

Step 2:

There you will see an option for “System”, click on it. On the Toolbar you will see a variety of options. Go for “Automatic Updates’”.

Step 3:

Once you do so the following window will open up with various options.

Go for ‘Automatic (recommended)’. Here you can select the day and time from the drop down list when the update process will start. Or if you want you can go for one of the other two options “Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them” or “Notify me but don’t automatically Download or Install them”. Meaning of these two options are self explanatory.

But it is never advised to choose the last option “Turn off Automatic Updates”. It will disclose your system to possible threats which can paralyse your system.
